Downhill Skiing in Aspen

There are four separate ski areas in Aspen, Colorado: Aspen Highlands, Aspen Mountain, Buttermilk, and Snowmass. All four can be skied on the same ticket, and are connected by a shuttle system. Aspen Highlands, Aspen Mountain, and Buttermilk are all very near downtown Aspen, while Snowmass is a bit further down the valley.

Aspen Highlands

Aspen Highlands is widely considered the Aspen, Colorado locals’ favorite of the four ski areas. The summit is breathtaking – 12,500 feet in the air, the view includes Maroon Bells and Pyramid peak. Three high-speed quads bring you to the top of the mountain – one long ridge with trails on either side. Golden Horn, Olympic Bowl, and Highland Bowl offer some of the most thrilling descents in Colorado. Thunder, an open bowl, is very popular with

intermediate skiers.

Aspen Mountain

Aspen Mountain is a favorite among more advanced skiers that take to Aspen, Colorado’s slopes; nearly half of the trails here are rated advanced or expert. Bell Mountain, Walsh’s, Hyrup’s, and Kristi’s offer great Aspen, Colorado bump skiing, and Walsh’s is a special favorite for snowboarders. Ruthie’s Run, Ridge of the Bell, and International offer longer runs. Everyone should check out Bonnie’s, the mid-mountain restaurant at Aspen Mountain and a great destination for people watching.

Buttermilk

Buttermilk hosts the Winter X Games, but it remains something of a secret among the serious skiers in Aspen, Colorado, mostly because many consider it to be kids’ stuff. It’s true that there are no expert runs at Buttermilk and that it is very novice friendly, but there is still some great skiing to be had here. Sterner Run is long and curvy, while Racer’s Edge allows one to go super fast. A half-pipe and Crazy T’rain Terrain Park are favorites for snowboarders. Buttermilk is a great family-friendly, beginner-friendly skiing destination with great powder.

Snowmass

Snowmass is the biggest of the four ski areas in Aspen, Colorado and is the second-largest ski area in the US! It features a Treehouse Kids’ Adventure Center that is the HQ for Aspen’s family and kid-centered activities. Snowmass features a fantastic mid-mountain restaurant, a “Noon Groom,” which is a freshly groomed run that opens at noon, and the Long Shot Trail, a trail that gives intermediate skiers the backcountry experience while still “in-bounds.”  Snowmass also has one of the best snowboarding programs in the country.
