Historic Sites in Aspen

Aspen, Colorado was founded in 1880 and was very much a center of the Silver Boom in Colorado. Because of that early influx of money, the Aspen, Colorado area is now home to many beautiful historic buildings. Located in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, - about 40 miles away from Aspen, CO - Hotel Colorado is a beautiful old property that is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and harks back to the glory days of this little mountain community. The Hotel was inspired by the Villa de Medici in Italy. Teddy Roosevelt spent a lot of time here in 1905.

Ashcroft Ghost Town

Located in Castle Creek Valley, just 10 miles south of Aspen, Colorado, the Ashcroft Ghost Town. Established when silver mines were found, the town quickly went under when it was realized the mines were very shallow and could not sustain the town. The town quickly went from 2000 to just 100 resident and slowly declined until 1974, when the Aspen Historical Society named it a National Register Historic Site and preserved the ghost town. Guided and self-guided tours are available.

The Wheeler/Stallard House Museum presents a great history of the town of Aspen, Colorado. The museum is housed in a 1888 Queen Anne, a perfect setting for learning about the history of Aspen, Colorado.
